COVID-19 – Govt of Canada Support – Update#2

Message from Mr. Chandra Arya, Member of Parliament, Nepean

The COVID-19 crisis is affecting all Canadians – individuals, businesses and the whole society. Please remember, we will face this together, and we will get through this together. Our government is working around the clock to help Canadian families at home and Canadians in difficult situations abroad.

  1. No Canadian should have to worry about how they’re going to put food on the table or pay their bills because of COVID-19. Businesses are getting severely affected and many have already closed. We have introduced new EI rules, Emergency Care Benefits, wage subsidies for small businesses, modified Canada Student Loans rules, and many other measures. I encourage you to visit Canada’s Economic Response Plan to see full details.
  2. Many have already written to me highlighting their unique problems. We will take further measures to support both the affected individuals and the businesses (especially targeting those who may not qualify in already announced measures). My priority and our government’s priorities are making sure that everyone who needs help should get it.
  3. We have a $27 billion plan for workers and businesses and $55 billion in economic stimulus. However, I do understand and appreciate many more Canadians need help and we shall do it and will take further measures.
  4. If any of your loved ones are stranded anywhere in the world, please let us know their details. We have already been dealing with numerous cases and will do for yours too. [If you are not a resident of Nepean riding, please contact your local MP.]
  5. I know to make special arrangements for hundreds of thousands of Canadians (out of about three million Canadians abroad) stranded in so many countries appears almost impossible but we are working hard to find solutions. We have already announced some financial help to mitigate hardship but we recognize the best option is for our citizens to be back home.
  6. While foreigners are banned from entering Canada, family members of citizens and permanent residents are allowed. We just changed the rule to include parents in the definition of family members. People with a student visa and work permit will also be allowed to enter Canada.
  7. I encourage businesses to visit Resources for Businesses for information about supporting your employees and your business. It will be constantly updated as the COVID-19 crisis evolve. I also suggest download Canada Business App to find tailored supports to address your specific needs and questions about COVID-19.
  8. While my office is closed for in person visit, we are still working hard to serve our constituents. If you are a resident of Nepean and have any question, please don’t hesitate to ask me. Though my priority is to respond and take action to help those who are directly affected (like travel, EI and small business) I will try my best to provide answers to you all.
  9. Once again, I want to stress that this is a truly unprecedented public health crisis–one that requires a collective response. Each and every one of us has to step up and do our partSocial distancing and other measures recommended by Health Canada are essential to combating the spread of the virus. I know that if we all act with the appropriate caution, follow expert advice, and rely on the support of our families, neighbours, and loved ones, we will get through the difficult times ahead.
  10. Our government will be there with you every step of the way, and we will do whatever it takes.
