Life Story of Dr. Narinder Garg

Dr. Narinder Garg, a PhD from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, has been an active member of the Indo-Canadian community for the past 25 years. His vast experience in conceiving, planning, and organizing various events has helped him become a regular contributor towards the enhancements of ties between the great nations of India and Canada.

After graduation in Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Narinder Garg completed his Master of Engineering in Machine Design from University of Roorkee where his academic excellence earned him a gold medal. Thereafter, he taught undergraduate and post graduate students at Delhi College of Engineering for about 21 years. Along with teaching, he carried out research and development activities and published numerous research papers.

Dr. Garg’s work ethic, honesty, and level of commitment made various institutions entrust him with critical tasks requiring meticulous planning and confidentiality. For example, he was the Deputy Convener for all-India DCE Entrance examination conducted by Delhi University. He was also the Superintendent of Examinations and external examiner for various educational institutions. He also organized an all-India conference on Industrial Tribology.

After immigrating to Canada in 1996 and yearning for a new challenge, he switched his profession from teaching to the high-tech industry. He has decades of experience in the IT industry in the field of quality assurance. His attention to detail and enthusiasm to learn regularly earned him praise from his seniors. He has worked in well-known companies like Tellabs, Nortel Networks and Nav Canada. He retired in December 2017 to devote his entire time to community service.

Dr. Garg has a very strong desire to give back to community in any capacity he can. He is the Executive Vice President of an Indo-Canadian organization named Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC). He regularly conducts workshops for seniors as part of the ICCC seniors’ programs. His enthusiasm to serve the Indo-Canadian community is evident in organizing a large number of functions and events to further the bond between India and Canada.

He is a highly skilled wood worker and enjoys playing “Dhol” at various events.

Advice to New Immigrants

One should be prepared for an initial period of struggle ranging from a few months to a few years. New immigrants need to have a lot of patience and the zeal to make it work in Canada. He strongly recommends to have the company of people who have a positive attitude and who will encourage them through difficult times. As is evident by millions of immigrants already settled here, Canada is a country which will definitely reward your perseverance and hard work provided you are willing to put in the effort.
