Dr. Jagmohan Humar, C.M.

Dr. Jagmohan Humar has been honoured with the appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to structural engineering, for his commitment to education, and for his long-standing service as a community leader.

The Order was established in 1967 as a fellowship that recognizes the outstanding merit or distinguished service of Canadians who make a major difference to Canada through lifelong contributions in their field of endeavour.  Membership is thus accorded to those who exemplify the order’s Latin motto, desiderantes meliorem patriam, meaning “they desire a better country.”

About Dr. Jagmohan Humar

Dr. Humar is a Distinguished Research Professor at Carleton University. He joined Carleton University as a member of the faculty in 1975 and served as the Chair of its Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for 10 years from 1990 to 2000. After his retirement in 2003, the University appointed him Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Research Professor in recognition of his continued research activity and graduate supervision. He is internationally recognized for his research in the areas of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. He is the author of a widely acclaimed book on Dynamics of Structures, now in its 3rd edition. He has also authored over 130 journal and conference papers.

Dr. Humar has served for over 20 years on the Canadian Standing Committee on Earthquake Design, the committee responsible for formulating the earthquake design standard for Canada. He has served as consultant to Public Works Canada on seismic rehabilitation of many federal buildings including the 3 blocks of Parliament. He has been a special consultant on the design of several outstanding civil engineering projects including the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa and the SkyDome in Toronto. He has received several awards for his work including the Fellowships of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and the Engineering Institute of Canada and the most prestigious honour in Engineering, the Fellowship of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Humar will be decorated, at a later date, with the Insignia of a Member of the Order of Canada by the Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, at an investiture ceremony generally held in the Rideau Hall.
