Life Story of Charanjit Wadehra

Mr. Charanjit Wadehra did his master’s in physics and decided to get into teaching profession. In India, he was a teacher in various institutes including the prestigious, National defense academy, which is a military academy in Pune.

His younger brother was already in Canada since 1959. His brother persuaded him to move to Canada. Mr. Wadehra moved to Canada in April 1968 after leaving a successful career of 14 years in National defense academy. He has no regrets of moving to Canada and feels that teaching profession is a very well-respected profession in Canada and loved the equality in job conditions.

He did not face any specific challenges in Canada except his wife who felt isolated and suffocated. Back home, they had their bungalow which was given by the military and had servants. Servants were doing all household works for them whilst in Canada they had 2-bedroom apartment instead of a big house. His wife was herself doing all the household chores. It was more challenging for his wife than for him.

Initially he had to struggle a lot and attended many job fairs to get a job. Finally, he succeeded in getting a job in Bell high school as head of the physics department. Subsequently he went to Queens University in Kingston to take teachers training course. At Queens University his teachers respected him as a very well qualified. In Bells High school also, he was the most respected teacher and the principal of the school too had a very good opinion about him.

He had been teaching in high school for 25 years in addition, he was also teaching in night school from 1969 onwards till 1993.

He finally retired in 1993. After retirement he started volunteering First for and later for Ottawa police where he was a coordinator in business crime prevention program. He is also a coordinator of ICCC’s Punjabi senior association since 1996.He was volunteer for western Ottawa community resource center for 20 years where he was driving patients to their appointments.

The message which he would like to pass for immigrants is that they must work hard without having any negativity.

 The Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization awarded him for his work in the community at a gala on March 1.

Kanata resident and retired physics teachers at Bell High School recognized him and named him as “Hero Among us”.
