Life Story of Urmila Valia

I came to Canada in 1958. My husband was already here at the time. His first job was in Montreal and that is where we lived after marriage. I am a social worker by profession, so I had no problem getting a job right away. I started working within a month. When I was working in Montréal, I was doing family counselling. In those days, welfare was being distributed to people through social services. I came from New Delhi. Montréal, at that time seemed like small village to me. There were very few people and it was a small town. I was very fortunate to be treated very well by the people of Montréal. People were very friendly, very outgoing. Overall, I had a very good experience. I spent about 40 years in Montréal and after retiring, I moved to Ottawa in 1998 as I wanted to be closer to my daughter. My focus since retirement has been myself mainly because in social work I was listening and helping other people and now it was time for me to help myself. I’ve been spending my time doing the things I used to love to do like art. The message I would like to give is to the parents of your generation. I would like to tell them to let a little loose and let your children live their life the way they choose to.
